The Christmas tree you bring into your home in December has already been growing for years.

At our family farm in Surrey, we grow Nordmann Fir Christmas trees outdoors through the changing seasons, caring for them as they develop from young trees into the full, well-shaped Christmas trees our customers eventually take home.

Growing Christmas trees is a long-term process. Each year brings another stage of growth, care and shaping before a tree is ready to be selected for Christmas.

It Starts with a Young Tree

Every Christmas tree starts small.

Young Nordmann Firs are planted with enough room to develop as they mature. From there, nature does much of the growing, but producing an attractive Christmas tree requires patience and ongoing care.

The trees remain outdoors throughout the year, growing through the Surrey seasons and gradually developing their characteristic shape and foliage.

There is no shortcut: producing a good real Christmas tree takes time.

Shaping Our Christmas Trees

A Christmas tree doesn't automatically grow into the balanced shape you see when it arrives in your home.

As our Nordmann Firs develop, we monitor their shape and growth. Where necessary, trees are carefully shaped to encourage an even structure and the full, natural appearance customers expect from a real Christmas tree.

Every tree grows differently, which is part of the character of choosing a real tree.

Our aim isn't to make every tree identical, but to grow healthy, attractive trees while retaining their natural character.

How Long Does a Christmas Tree Take to Grow?

Christmas trees take several years to reach the heights commonly used in homes, and larger trees naturally require longer to grow.

The exact growing time varies according to the tree variety, growing conditions and the size required.

This is why Christmas tree farming requires long-term planning. The trees being cared for on the farm today may not become someone's Christmas tree for several seasons.

Selecting Trees for Christmas

As Christmas approaches, we select trees that are ready for the season.

We look at the overall shape, condition and size of each tree before deciding which are ready for our customers.

Because real Christmas trees are naturally grown, no two trees are exactly alike. Small differences in shape and character are part of what makes choosing a real Christmas tree different from choosing an artificial one.

Once selected, trees can be prepared for customers and made available in the sizes offered through our online store.
